Clinical manifestations

• men
  • hair thinning on the crown, or
  • hair recession in the area of the temples
• women
  • hair thinning of the crown
  • frontal hairline is preserved
  • a part that is distinctly wider anteriorly

Differential diagnosis

• polycystic ovary syndrome

Management

• men
  • 2%-5% topical minoxidil
  • oral finasteride
• women
  • 2%-5% topical minoxidil
  • finasteride of no benefit to majority of women AND it is pregnancy category: X
  • spironolactone may be of benefit
