Introduction

Dispensing a drug in the same class of pharmaceuticals & expected to have the same or very similar effects, but different from the prescribed drug. For example substitution of simvastatin for atorvastatin.

It differs from generic substitution, which is dispensing the same drug, just not the brand name drug.

Collaborative Drug Therapy Management is a mechanism for implementing therapeutic interchange.
