ocular enucleation

Indications

• endophthalmitis refractory to antibiotics
• cosmetic improvement in a blind eye
• blind, painful eyes
• malignant intraocular tumors
• ocular trauma to avoid sympathetic ophthalmia in other eye
• phthisis with degeneration
• congenital anophthalmia or severe microphthalmia to enhance development of the bony orbit

Procedure

• removal of the eye from the orbit while preserving all other orbital structures
