Introduction
The physician who is responsible for the care of a patient's general medical problems & for the coordination of required specialty care; this is usually an internist, family practitioner, general practitioner, pediatrician, or obstetrician, but may be from any specialty.
Notes
- greater per capita supply of primary care physicians is associated with lower population mortality[1]
- hospital readmissions among Medicare patients do not vary by provider[2]
- nurse practitioners may also serve as primary care providers
