Introduction
Model to predict survival in terminally ill patients
Variables include:
- diagnosis
- age
- number of days in the hospital
- presence of cancer
- neurologic function
- 11 physiologic measures
Score slightly improved with physician's estimate.
The study also revealed the extent to which families suffer financially as a result of their loved ones' serious illness
- 1/3 of patients required significant caregiving from family member
- in 20% of patients, a family member had to quit work, move in with their sick loved one, or make another major life change as a result of their loved one's illness
- 1/3 of families lost most or all of their family savings as a result of their loved one's illness
