  • rapid
  • inexpensive
  • one-time assessment
  • able to control independent variables

Disadvantages

  • survival effect
  • cohort effect
  • selection criteria are critical
  • difficult to control for lifelong habits
  • lack comparison groups
  • temporal sequence often unknown
  • cannot be used to assess temporal relationship between exposure & outcome
    • cannot be used to estimate risk difference
