- best used for determining prevalence & generating hypotheses
Advantages
- rapid
- inexpensive
- one-time assessment
- able to control independent variables
Disadvantages
- survival effect
- cohort effect
- selection criteria are critical
- difficult to control for lifelong habits
- lack comparison groups
- temporal sequence often unknown
- cannot be used to assess temporal relationship between exposure & outcome
- cannot be used to estimate risk difference
