• senses horizontal movement

• the larger of 2 membranous sacs in the vestibule of the labyrinth
• it lies in the ellipitical recess & gives rise to the semicircular canals.

Pathology

• hearing loss is not associated with utricle dysfunction
• utricle function is preserved in elderly
