cruciform (cruciate) ligament of atlas (C1)

Introduction

The strong cross-shaped ligament posterior to the dens of the axis (odontoid process), holding it against the anterior arch of the atlas.

Constituents

It consists of the:

• transverse ligament of the atlas
• longitudinal bands of the cruciform ligament
