• with superficial transverse perineal muscle, provides transverse support of the perineum & pelvic diaphragm (sagittal support comes from bulbospongiosus & external anal sphincter muscles)
• males: adds support to the bulb of the penis

pudendal nerve (branch of vagus nerve, CN X)
