Introduction

Intermediate part of outer circular layer of pharynx.

Origin

• stylohyoid ligament
• lesser cornu of hyoid bone (chondropharyngeal part)
• greater cornu of hyoid bone (ceratopharyngeal part)

Insertion

pharyngeal raphe in posterior wall of pharynx

Action

• narrows pharynx in the act of swallowing

Innervation

pharyngeal plexus (CN IX)
