atypical rib

Introduction

Ribs [1,2 & 10-12] are atypical.

1st rib:

2nd rib:

• thinner, less curved & substantially longer than the 1st rib
• 2 facets on its head for articulation with the bodies of thoracic vertebrae (T1 & T2) & a tubercle for muscle attachment

10th-12th ribs:

• like the 1st rib, have only one facet on their heads

11th & 12th ribs:

• short & have no necks or tubercles
