Structure
- the cornus ammonis [CA]-4 is synonymous with the hilus of the dentate gyrus situated between the granule cell layers of the dentate gyrus & CA3 region of the hippocampus
- it contains mossy cells & GABAergic interneurons
Afferents
- inputs from the granule cells in the dentate gyrus in the form of mossy fibers
- small number of connections from pyramidal cells in CA3
Efferents
- projection to the inner molecular layer of the dentate gyrus
Pathology
- left CA-4 volume may be decreased in patients with bipolar II disorder with depressive episodes[2]
