great saphenous vein

Origin

• dorsal vein of the great toe
• dorsal veinous arch of the foot

Course

• superficial vein in the medial aspect of leg
• originates in the foot anterior to the medial malleolus
• runs up the medial aspect of the leg

Empties into

• femoral vein anteriorly just inferior to the inguinal canal

Pathology

• valvular incompetence with retrograde venous flow resulting in venous stasis
