Small obligate, intracellular coccobacillus.

- Ehrlichia identified by light microscopy
- staining of peripheral blood neutrophils & monocytes for morula or loose aggregrates of bacteria within monocytes (E. chaffeensis) or granulocytes (E. phagocytophilia, E. equi)
- Ehrlichia DNA
- Ehrlichia serology
- Ehrlichia identified by culture
