Introduction

A mismatch between ventilation (aeration of) alveoli of the lungs & perfusion of the pulmonary arteries supplying the ventilated regions of the lungs. Perfusion of a lobule or lobe of the lung in which the alveoli are filled with fluid rather than air results in a mismatch. Ventilation of alveoli supplied by a vessel obstructed by a thrombus also results in a mismatch.

The result of the mismatch is inefficient oxygenation of blood & if the mismatch is sufficient, hypoxia.
