Introduction
A colorless, non-flammable gas with a strong, suffocating odor.
It is a reducing agent used to prevent oxidative degradation of food & medicinal products.
When dissolved in water, sulfur dioxide forms sulfurous acid.
SO2 + H2O <--> H2SO3
Pathology
- increased sulfur dioxide (SO2) exposure is associated with the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)[3]
- exposure time window for SO2 is at least 10-years prior to onset
