Pathology
- oxidativie sulfation of 1 or 2 of the 4 heme groups of hemoglobin
- occurs on exposure to certain toxic agents
- iron remains in the ferrous state, but oxygen affinity is about 100 fold less than for hemoglobin A
- sulfur is found bound to the porphyrin ring
- sulfhemoglobin persists for the life of the red cell
- results in cyanosis
- symptoms are not usually present
