ergonovine (Cornocentin, Metriclavin)

Introduction

Ergonovine maleate.

Indications

• provoking coronary vasospasm in patients with suspected Prinzmetal's angina
• prophylaxis for migraine
  • when amitriptyline & propranolol contraindicated
  • 0.2 mg IV/IM (PO ?) BID
• hemorrhage, postpartum hemorrhage

Dosage

0.2 mg/mL for injection

Adverse effects

• hypertension
• nausea/vomiting
• chest pain
• dizziness

Mechanism of action

• partial agonist or antagonist at alpha-adrenergic, dopaminergic & serotonin receptors
• produces vasoconstriction mainly of capacitance vessels
