Introduction
Naturally occurring monobactams are produced by various bacteria found in soil (e.g. Acetobacter, Agrobacterium, Chromobacterium, Flexibacter, Gluconobacter & generally have only weak antibacterial activity. Synthetic monobactams contain a 3-amino monobactamic (3-AMA) nucleus; addition of various substituents on the 3-AMA nucleus results in monobactams with different spectra of antimicrobial activity, potency & stability to hydrolysis by beta-lactamases.
