Indications
- simple urinary tract infection (UTI), including UTI due to multidrug-resistant gram negative bacteria
Contraindications
- pyelonephritis (inadequate renal tissue levels)[4]
Dosage
- 3 g packet single oral dose, 2nd dose on day 5 for complicated UTI
- 1-16 g/day IV (only available PO in U.S.)
Antimicrobial activity
- gram-positive bacteria, including MRSA & VRE
- gram-negative bacteria, including multidrug-resistant gram negative bacteria[3]
Adverse effects
Notes
- less effective & more expensive than nitrofurantoin or TMP/SMX (Bactrim)[4]
