cantharidin (Cantharone, Ycanth)

Introduction

Tradename: Cantharone. 0.7% colloidin solution.

Indications

• common warts
• plantar warts
• molluscum contagiosum

Dosage

Use:

• application followed by occlusion for 24 hours
• a blister forms, which heals within 1 week

Liquid: 0.7% in a film-forming vehicle containing: acetone, pyroxilin, castor oil & camphor, 7.5 mL.

Adverse effects

• not common (1-10%)
  • syncope, delirium, ataxia, dermal irritation, dermal burns, acantholysis, GI hemorrhage, rectal bleeding, dysphagia, priapism, fatty degeneration, hyper-reflexia, conjunctivitis, iritis, keratitis, proteinuria, hematuria, burning of oropharynx
• other
  • pain from the blister
  • formation of a ring wart (treatable)
