Introduction
Corpora amylacea accumulate with age in astrocyte processes, principally in subpial & subependymal regions around blood vessels. They are spherical, basophilic, PAS(+), sometimes concentrically laminated structures with a diameter of 1-150 uM. Ultrastructurally, they are composed of branched filaments 8 nM in diameter. Composition is chiefly glucose polymers with variable content of phosphate & sulfate. Protein content is <5%.
