microbody-targeting signal or peroxisomal-targeting sequence

Introduction
In some peroxisomal proteins, the targeting signal resides in the last 3 amino acid residues of the C-terminus. The consensus is Ser-Lys-Leu (some variations are allowed in all 3 positions). Since the peroxisomal targeting signal is also recognized by other microbodies, it known as the C-terminal microbody targeting signal (CMTS).
Not all microbody proteins contain a CMTS; some seem to contain an internal CMTS-like sequence, but it is not yet known if it is active.
