initiator element (INR)

Introduction

Two promoter elements, the TATA box & the initiator element (INR) are capable of directing specific transcription initiation. Most promoters associated with genes transcribed by RNA polymerases II & III contain an initiator element. The initiator element encompasses the transcriptional start site.
