• neurotrophic for cerebellar granule cells
• inhibits microglial growth
• induces neuronal differentiation in retinoblastoma cells
• inhibitor of angiogenesis in cornea & vitreous, produced by retinal cells
• extracellular phosphorylation enhances antiangiogenic activity

Structure

• shares homology with serpin family proteins but does not inhibit proteases
• N-terminus is blocked
• the N-terminal (AA 44-121) exhibits neurite outgrowth- inducing activity
• the C-terminal exposed loop (AA 382-418) is essential for serpin activity
• belongs to the serpin family
