globoside alpha-1,3-N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase 1 (Forssman glycolipid synthetase-like protein, GBGT1)
Jump to navigation
Jump to search
Function
- glycosylation
- catalyzes formation of some glycolipid via addition of N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) in alpha-1,3-linkage to some substrate
- the glycolipids may serve for adherence of some pathogens
- in contrast to its mouse or canine ortholog, does not mediate formation of Forssman glycolipid (Forssman antigen), which does not exist in human
Structure
- conserved DXD motif is involved in cofactor binding
- Mn+2 interacts with the beta-phosphate group of UDP & may have a role in catalysis
- belongs to the glycosyltransferase 6 family
Compartment
membrane
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Expression
- widely expressed
- expressed in placenta, ovary, peripheral blood leukocytes > liver, thymus, testis
