Function
- homophilic cell adhesion molecule that promotes axonal growth
- may play a role in nerve regeneration & in the formation & function of other tissues
- cell adhesion requires divalent cations
Structure
belongs to the ninjurin family
Compartment
membrane
Expression
- widely expressed in both adult & embryonic tissues, primarily those of epithelial origin
- induced by nerve injury both in dorsal root ganglion neurons & in Schwann cells
