Function
- mediates Zn+2 uptake.
- Zn+2 uptake may be mediated by a Zn+2/HCO3- symport
- functions in the presence of albumin
- may also transport other divalent cations
- role in contact inhibition of epithelial cells (putative)
- Zn+2 uptake is inhibited at pH levels < 7.0
- inhibited by Cu+2, Co+2 & Mn+2, but not Fe+2
Structure
belongs to the ZIP transporter (TC 2.A.5) family
Compartment
Expression
- expressed only in prostate & uterine epithelial cells
- expression induced in epithelial cells by contact inhibition
Pathology
- loss of expression may play a role in tumorigenesis
