• malate from pyruvate
• subject to allosteric activation by fumarate
• can also use NADP+ but is more effective with NAD+

(S)-malate + NAD+ <--> pyruvate + CO2 + NADH

Cofactor: divalent metal cations, prefers Mg+2 or Mn+2
