Function
- promotes formation & maturation of oligodendrocytes, especially within the brain
- cooperates with OLIG2 to establish the pMN domain of the embryonic neural tube (putative)
Structure
- contains 1 basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domain
Compartment
- nucleus
- in neonatal mice, olig1 localized to the nucleus in oligodencrocytes, but became more cytoplasmic after week 2 & was entirely cytoplasmic in white matter in the adult
Expression
- expressed in the brain
- expressed in myelinating oligodendrocytes & oligodendrocyte progenitors in developing CNS & mature oligodendrocytes
- strongly expressed in oligodendrogliomas
- expression is weak to moderate in astrocytomas
- expression in glioblastomas is highly variable
