• promotes formation & maturation of oligodendrocytes, especially within the brain
• cooperates with OLIG2 to establish the pMN domain of the embryonic neural tube (putative)

• in neonatal mice, olig1 localized to the nucleus in oligodencrocytes, but became more cytoplasmic after week 2 & was entirely cytoplasmic in white matter in the adult

• expressed in the brain
• expressed in myelinating oligodendrocytes & oligodendrocyte progenitors in developing CNS & mature oligodendrocytes
• strongly expressed in oligodendrogliomas
• expression is weak to moderate in astrocytomas
• expression in glioblastomas is highly variable
