Indications
Storage
- blood specimens (including buffy coats)
- store at 4-8 degrees C
- for shipping or long-term storage
- freeze at -80 degrees C if possible
- many specimens should be kept cool, but NOT frozen
Specimen
- respiratory secretions
- aspirates from the respiratory tract
- nasal swabs
- blood specimens (including buffy coats)
- vaginal & rectal swabs
- swab specimens from suspect skin lesions
- stool specimens (some viral agents)
Minimum volume:
Container:
- fluid specimens in sterile containers containing holding medium (antibiotics to prevent bacterial growth & preserve viability of virus)
- swab samples in viral culturette devices, kept on ice but NOT frozen
