Indications
Methods
- high-sensitivity urine pregnancy tests include:[3]
- LifeSign1, One Step dBest, First Response Early Result
- RIA for urine hCG has a sensitivity of 0.01 ng/mL (0.13 mIU/mL), 1-2 orders of magnitude more sensitive than the home pregnancy test
- RIA detects 90% of pregnancies (> 0.015 ng/mL) by the 1st day of the missed menstrual period & 97% after 1 week
Procedure
- use 1st morning urine; it is highest in hcG[3]
- allow 10 minutes before reading the test[2]
- retesting in a few days may improve sensitivity[3]
Notes
- most home pregnancy tests claim detection limits for hCG of 15-100 mIU/mL[1]
- many false negatives are likely when the test is performed on the 1st day of the missed period
