Principle
- separation of molecules, especially polypeptides by molecular size by passage of a solution or mixture through columns of beads of cross-linked dextrans or other inert material of defined pore size range
- the smaller molecules are selectively retained; the larger ones selectively excluded by the column pores
- thus, the larger molecules elute from the column first, the smaller molecules emerge last
