toxic granulation

Etiology

• severe infection
• other toxic conditions

Pathology

• dark blue-purple (basophilic) cytoplasmic granules in metamyelocytes, bands or neutrophils
• normally granules loose their basophilia in the mature neutrophil
• the toxic granules stain peroxidase positive*

* There may be less peroxidase activity in toxic neutrophils than in normal ones
