Function
- might act as an inhibitor of spontaneous Ca+2 carbonate precipitation
- may be associated with neuronal sprouting in brain, & with brain & pancreas regeneration
Structure
- the composition of the O-linked carbohydrate on Thr-27 is complex & varied
- in the crystallographic structure, the attached sugar appears to be N-acetylglucosamine, typical of an intracellular protein, rather than N-acetylgalactosamine
- contains 1 C-type lectin domain
Compartment
Expression
- expressed in pancreatic acinar cells
- expressed, at lower levels, in brain
- high expression levels in fetal & infant brains
- much lower in adult brains
Pathology
- enhanced expression of REG1A-related transcripts & intraneuronal accumulation of REG1A-like proteins is found in brain from patients with Alzheimer disease & Down's syndrome
