Function
- endoplasmic reticulum transferase
- has no sphingomyelin synthase activity
- can convert phosphatidylethanolamine & ceramide to ceramide phosphoethanolamine with low yield
- appears to operate as a ceramide sensor to control ceramide homeostasis in the endoplasmic reticulum
- seems to be critical for the integrity of the early secretory pathway
Structure
- the SAM domain is required to retain SMAD8 in the endoplasmic reticulum
- belongs to the sphingomyelin synthase family
- contains 1 SAM (sterile alpha motif) domain
Compartment
- endoplasmic reticulum membrane; multi-pass membrane protein
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
