Function
- hydrolyzes on epoxides (alkene oxides, oxiranes) & arene oxides
- role in xenobiotic metabolism by degrading potentially toxic epoxides
- determines steady-state levels of physiological mediators
- low phosphatase activity
epoxide + H2O <--> glycol
Cofactor: Mg+2
Kinetic parameters:
- KM=1.1 mM for p-nitrophenyl phosphate
- Vmax=5.8 nmol/min/mg enzyme
Structure
- homodimer
- N-terminal domain has phosphatase activity
- C-terminal domain has epoxide hydrolase activity
- belongs to the AB hydrolase superfamily, epoxide hydrolase family
Compartment
Expression
- induced by compounds that cause peroxisome proliferation including clofibrate, tiadenol & fenofibrate
