Function
- FAD-dependent amine oxidase secreted by the kidney
- circulates in blood & modulates cardiac function & systemic blood pressure
- degrades catecholamines
- lowers blood pressure by decreasing cardiac contractility & heart rate & preventing a compensatory increase in peripheral vascular resistance
- elevated plasma catecholamines may activate plasma renalase & promotes its secretion & synthesis
- unlikely that renalase has physiologically relevant catecholamine-oxidizing activity
Structure
belongs to the renalase family
Compartment
- secreted into blood by the kidney
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Expression
- expressed in the kidney > heart, skeletal muscle, small intestine
Pathology
- plasma concentration is markedly diminished in patients with end-stage renal disease
