Function

• FAD-dependent amine oxidase secreted by the kidney
• circulates in blood & modulates cardiac function & systemic blood pressure
• degrades catecholamines
  • dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine in vitro
• lowers blood pressure by decreasing cardiac contractility & heart rate & preventing a compensatory increase in peripheral vascular resistance
• elevated plasma catecholamines may activate plasma renalase & promotes its secretion & synthesis
• unlikely that renalase has physiologically relevant catecholamine-oxidizing activity
