Function
- atypical histone H2A
- can replace conventional H2A in some nucleosomes
- may be incorporated into a proportion of nucleosomes, replacing one or more H2A molecules
Structure
- docking domain is responsible for weaker heterodimerization with H2B
- belongs to the histone H2A family
- in contrast to other H2A histones, does not contain conserved residues that are the target of post-translational modifications
Compartment
- nucleus
- associated with active X chromosome & with autosomes
- absent from inactive X chromosome
- excluded from Barr bodies
