• can replace conventional H2A in some nucleosomes

Structure

• docking domain is responsible for weaker heterodimerization with H2B
• belongs to the histone H2A family
• in contrast to other H2A histones, does not contain conserved residues that are the target of post-translational modifications

Compartment

• nucleus
• associated with the active X chromosome & with autosomes
• absent from the inactive X chromosome
• excluded from Barr bodies
