• converts endogenous N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), a major component of complex carbohydrates, from lysosomal degradation or nutritional sources into GlcNAc 6-phosphate
• also has manNAc kinase activity (putative)

ATP + N-acetyl-D-glucosamine = ADP + N-acetyl-D-glucosamine 6-phosphate
