Function
- retinol oxidation for synthesis of retinoic acid (putative)
- medium-chain (octanol) & aromatic (m-nitrobenzaldehyde) compounds are the best substrate
- ethanol is not a good substrate but at the high ethanol concentrations reached in the digestive tract, it plays a role in the ethanol oxidation & contributes to first pass ethanol metabolism
an alcohol + NAD+ <--> an aldehyde or ketone + NADH
Cofactor: binds 2 Zn+2 per subunit
Structure
- homodimer
- belongs to the Zn+2-containing alcohol dehydrogenase family, class-4 subfamily
Compartment
Expression
preferentially expressed in stomach
