multiple sleep latency test (MSLT)

Indications

sleep is measured over night.
the following day, repeated measurements of sleep latency (time to onset of sleep) is measured at 2 hour intervals under standardized conditions
in narcolepsy, a decreased mean sleep latency with at least 2 sleep onset REM-periods is observed
- mean latency to sleep in narcolepsy patients is 5 minutes
- mean latency to sleep in normal individuals > 10 minutes
EEG, EKG & EOG (electro-oculogram) are monitored
