Indications
- detection of carotid sinus hypersensitivity
- diagnosis & treatment of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia
Contraindications
- elderly
- patients with carotid bruits
- bilateral carotid sinus massage should never be performed

Mechanism of action
- maneuver to enhance parasympathetic tone, causing vasodilation, slowing of the heart, & fall of blood pressure through stimulation of the carotid sinus
