Introduction
Lateral curvature of the spine. Scoliosis may be structural or functional.
Classification
Structural scoliosis:
- rotation of the vertebrae on each other
- deformation of rib cage
- structural scoliosis is accentuated when the patient bends forward
Functional scoliosis:
- compensatory for other abnormality
- unequal leg lengths
- functional scoliosis disappears when the patient bends forward
Idiopathic scoliosis:[2][3][4]
- occurs in adolescents
- milder in course than other forms
- generally resolves without intervention by early adulthood
Genetics
- genetic variations in CHD7 are associated with susceptibility to idiopathic scoliosis type 3
