anagen effluvium

Etiology

• antineoplastic agents

Pathology

• normally only 10-15% of hairs are telogen hairs
• in telogen effluvium, 30-60% of hairs are telogen hairs
• in anagen effluvium, 100% are telogen hairs

Clinical manifestations

• an abrupt loss of actively growing hairs in response to a stressor
• 90% of hairs are generally actively growing, thus anagen effluvium is diffuse
• it generally occurs 1-4 weeks after the insult
