• tuberculosis with suspected tuberculous involvement of pleural space
  • culture of pleural biopsy
  • diagnostic yield > 75%
• malignant pleural effusion - diagnostic yield 50%
  • repeat thoracentesis & pleural fluid analysis prior to pleural biopsy
• mesothelioma - diagnostic yield < 30%
