medullary sponge kidney disease

Pathology

• small cystic outpouching of the renal papillary collecting ducts
• does NOT lead to a decrease in glomerular filtration rate
• ectactic ducts of Bellini (papillary ducts)
• nephrocalcinosis

Genetics

• autosomal dominant form
• sporadic form

Clinical manifestations

• nephrolithiasis
• renotubular abnormalities

Laboratory

• microscopic or gross hematuria
• hypercalciuria
• nephrocalcinosis

Radiology

• excretory urography:
  • dilated collecting ducts
  • unilateral, bilateral or involving a single papilla
• calcifications of collecting ducts may be visualized on plain radiographs
