Traube's space

Introduction

Anatomic landmark, triangular in shape, located under the lower left intercostal ribs, bordered by the ribcage superiorly & laterally, the midaxillary line laterally, & the left border of the sternum medially.

Percussion in this space is normally tympanitic because the stomach lies deep. Pulmonary emphysema, pleural effusion, & splenomegaly may shift the position of the stomach, resulting in dullness to percussion.
