Offered at only a few centers. University of Pittsburg has considerable experience in performing intestinal transplantation.

Indications

• short bowel syndrome secondary to bowel resection
• inability to tolerate parenteral nutrition

Management

• FK506 (tacrolimus) is more effective then cyclosporine for immunosuppression
• prognosis:
  • 1 year survival of 78%; 5 year survival of 63%
  • 3 year survival is 29-37%
